SGB Update 7-01-2020

Categories: General News

Dear St. Gregory Families,
I don’t know about you, but all of this uncertainty with COVID-19 is frustrating. I am a planner, and I just want to have it all lined out, but sadly that is not possible with our current situation. However, we are seven weeks away from the start of school, and I wanted to give you an update on what is known. You have received the school supply list, and you know from the school calendar we will be starting school on August 20th.

What will school look like when we begin? Honestly, none of us know for sure.

The current plan is to have all students return full time for in person classes on August 20th. Having made that statement, there are still many questions and details to consider: How to keep safe those students and staff who can’t risk exposure to COVID-19, movement of students in the school building during the day, classroom arrangements, considerations for eating lunch, athletic practices and games, the physical and mental well being of our students and staff, SACC before and after school, sharing equipment in specials classes like technology, music, and PE, etc. The list goes on…

I wanted you to know the Diocese of Kansas City -St. Joseph has a Diocesan Task Force that has been meeting to consider all the things associated with the reopening of schools in August. This group is working to create a list of guidelines/recommendations for us to follow. Once they have completed their work, a local St. Gregory Parent Advisory group will be meeting to review the diocesan plans and formulate our local guidelines for St. Gregory School. This parent advisory group is made up of our St. Gregory School Advisory Board as well as two local doctors and two nurses whose children attend St. Gregory School.

The St. Gregory Parent Advisory group will also take into account your responses on the Distance Learning Survey from the Diocesan Task Force that was sent out in May, especially the last 3 questions on the survey. That document is attached below. The first two columns are the number and percentage of St. Gregory Parent responses. The final column marked “Elementary” is the percentage of respondents in all the elementary schools in the Diocese of Kansas City- St. Joseph.

Please be patient and flexible as we develop these plans for the fall. Keep in mind things may change as new research about the virus becomes available. Please pray for both the Diocesan Task Force and our St. Gregory Parent Advisory group as they work to create a plan that can best meet the needs of our St. Gregory Barbarigo School Family as we start a new school year.

Hopefully, shortly after the first of August we will have a clearer picture of the path before us. I will share those details once they are complete. In the meantime, please stay healthy by making safe choices for you and your family so we can all be together in August!

Happy 4th of July!
God Bless!
Susan
