PE Update

In recent weeks we have been focusing on team activities.  Some of these activities include kickball, Capture the Flag, Soccer, Pin blast and many more.  During these activities we try to work with as many different people within our class as possible.  I am really trying to stress how important it is to be able to work with a wide variety of people as possible.  Please make this a priority at home and during recreational activities as well.

The students have also been completing what is called Fitness Week.  During this week the students participate in a variety of different activities which work on all of the components of fitness; cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and body composition.  Some of the activities the kindergarteners through 4th grade participate in include: tic-tac-toe fitness, UNO fitness, and Fitness for Points.  The 5th through 8th graders work on a lot of station work; whether it be individually or with partners.  They also participate in the activity Fitness for Points and Circuit work.  How Fitness for Points works is the students are given a sheet of paper and on the paper it has an abundance of fitness activities listed.  Each activity is worth a specific point value.  The students have to accumulate a certain amount of points before they can turn in their paper.  This way the students get to choose which fitness activities they would like to participate in.  During circuits the students perform a certain exercise for a specific amount of time then alternate with a jog or walk.

Before the students leave for Christmas break they will be participating in our Fitnessgram testing.  This will involve our 3rd through 8th graders.  Testing will involve the PACER, trunk lift, push-up, sit-up, and the sit and reach.  After our fitness testing is complete the 5th-8th graders will begin work on their Personal Fitness Plans.  They will have all Christmas Break to work on these.  During second semester they will be using their fitness plans during our Fitness weeks. The hope is by personalizing each student’s workout they will focus on the areas of our Fitnessgram tests that they need the most work.  We will have at least one more fitness testing before school is out for summer.

Before Christmas Break we will also complete our hockey unit.
